The Grand Wagoneer L’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The R1S doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Grand Wagoneer L are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The R1S doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Grand Wagoneer L has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The R1S doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

With its standard Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Rivian R1S, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Rivian R1S has not been tested.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Grand Wagoneer L has standard Park Assist with Rear Stop that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The R1S doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Grand Wagoneer L’s optional Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The R1S doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the Rivian R1S does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

Both the Grand Wagoneer L and the R1S have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

Warranty

There are almost 49 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Rivian dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Wagoneer L’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Grand Wagoneer L’s reliability 13 points higher than the R1S.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Rivian vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 88 more problems per 100 vehicles, Rivian is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Jeep vehicles are more reliable than Rivian vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Jeep 3 places higher in reliability than Rivian.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Wagoneer L’s brake rotors are larger than those on the R1S:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Grand Wagoneer L’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the R1S (285/45R22 vs. 275/50R22).

The Grand Wagoneer L’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the R1S’ 65 series tires. The Grand Wagoneer L’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the R1S Ascend Quad Max’s 50 series front tires.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Rivian R1S only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Grand Wagoneer L has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The R1S doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Wagoneer L has a standard full size spare so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare costs extra on the R1S. Without the option you must depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Wagoneer L’s wheelbase is 8.9 inches longer than on the R1S (130 inches vs. 121.1 inches).

Chassis

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 100 to 400 pounds less than the Rivian R1S.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Grand Wagoneer L has standard flush composite headlights. The R1S has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Grand Wagoneer L uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The R1S doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Grand Wagoneer L offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the R1S can only carry 7.

The Grand Wagoneer L has .2 inches more front headroom, 8.5 inches more front hip room, 5.5 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, 6.1 inches more rear legroom, 8.8 inches more rear hip room, 6.3 inches more rear shoulder room, .5 inches more third row headroom, 3.8 inches more third row legroom, 8.8 inches more third row hip room and 13.3 inches more third row shoulder room than the R1S.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Wagoneer L’s middle and third row seats recline. The R1S’ third row seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Grand Wagoneer L’s cargo area provides more volume than the R1S.

Both the Grand Wagoneer L and the R1S offer second row automatic folding seats. The Grand Wagoneer L’s optional third row seats also fold up or down at the press of a button. The R1S doesn’t offer automatic folding third row seats.

A standard locking glovebox and optional locking center console (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Grand Wagoneer L. The R1S doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

The Grand Wagoneer L’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The R1S’ tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Grand Wagoneer L’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The R1S doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its tailgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Rivian R1S is limited to 7700 pounds. The Grand Wagoneer L 4x4 offers up to a 9860 lbs. towing capacity.

The Grand Wagoneer L 4WD with optional equipment can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Grand Wagoneer L can be unhitched and driven around locally. The R1S can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the R1S, the Grand Wagoneer L Summit has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, foot pedal distance, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Wagoneer L offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The R1S doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Grand Wagoneer L’s standard Keyless Enter-N-Go allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. An advanced key system standard on the R1S doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

The Grand Wagoneer L’s standard side window demisters help clear frost or condensation from the side windows in the winter. The R1S doesn’t even offer side window demisters, so the driver may have to wipe the windows from the outside to gain side vision.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Grand Wagoneer L to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The R1S doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Grand Wagoneer L is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The R1S’ mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The Grand Wagoneer L has standard front air conditioned seats and the Grand Wagoneer L Summit offers them optionally in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The R1S doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Grand Wagoneer L Summit has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the R1S.

The Grand Wagoneer L is equipped with both FM and AM stereo radios, offering access to more content and better coverage than the R1S, which solely provides FM radio. With AM radio, you can enjoy a wider variety of stations featuring news, talk shows, sports commentary, native language programing, automated traffic guidance, and emergency broadcasts. AM waves travel further and penetrate buildings and obstacles more effectively than FM signals, especially at night. Having both FM and AM stereo radios the Grand Wagoneer L offers a more comprehensive listening experience compared to only FM in the R1S.

HD Radio boasts several benefits over conventional radio: superior sound quality with clearer and consistent FM broadcasts, CD-quality audio, and Multicast Channels offering up to four streams from a single station, adding programming choices. Cars like the Grand Wagoneer L equipped with HD Radio provide an improved in-car entertainment experience. The R1S, devoid of this technology, foregoes these benefits. Selecting the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L empowers drivers to enjoy a more immersive and enjoyable listening experience while on the go.

Compared to the Rivian R1S’ traditional radio, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L equipped with standard SiriusXM satellite radio provides an unmatched listening experience. Its extensive coverage guarantees consistent, crystal-clear reception across the continental U.S., and access to over 100 channels dedicated to a multitude of genres, including music, news, sports, talk shows, and comedy, many with only limited commercial breaks.

The Grand Wagoneer L’s optional ParkSense Automated Parking can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The R1S doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Model Availability

The Grand Wagoneer L is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The R1S doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Jeep Wagoneer outsold the Rivian R1S by over two to one during 2024.
