The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The XC90 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

With its standard Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Volvo XC90, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L achieved a “Acceptable” rating - the second highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The Volvo XC90 has not been tested.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the Volvo XC90 does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

Both the Grand Wagoneer L and the XC90 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L weighs 1016 to 2262 pounds more than the Volvo XC90. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L is safer than the Volvo XC90:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L is safer than the Volvo XC90:

Side impacts caused 23% of all road fatalities in 2018, down from 29% in 2003, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced its side barrier test. In order to continue improving vehicle safety, the IIHS has started using a more severe side impact test: 37 MPH (up from 31 MPH), with a 4180-pound barrier (up from 3300 pounds). The results of this newly developed test demonstrates that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L is safer than the XC90:

Warranty

Jeep’s powertrain warranty covers the Grand Wagoneer L 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC90. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the XC90 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 8 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Wagoneer L’s warranty.

Reliability

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Grand Wagoneer L has a standard 230-amp alternator. The XC90’s 210-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Grand Wagoneer L has a standard 830-amp battery. The XC90’s 800-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 72 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is rated below average.

Engine

The Grand Wagoneer L’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 173 more horsepower (420 vs. 247) and 202 lbs.-ft. more torque (468 vs. 266) than the XC90 B5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The Grand Wagoneer L’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 125 more horsepower (420 vs. 295) and 158 lbs.-ft. more torque (468 vs. 310) than the XC90 B6’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

Both the Grand Wagoneer L and the XC90 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All Grand Wagoneer Ls have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The XC90 T8 doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended for maximum performance). The XC90 requires premium, which can cost on average about 35.1 cents more per gallon.

The Grand Wagoneer L has 11.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC90 (30.5 vs. 18.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Wagoneer L’s brake rotors are larger than those on the XC90:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Grand Wagoneer L’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XC90 (285/45R22 vs. 275/45R20).

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Volvo XC90 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The Grand Wagoneer L has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The XC90 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Wagoneer L has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the XC90; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the Grand Wagoneer L uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the XC90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Wagoneer L’s wheelbase is 12.5 inches longer than on the XC90 (130 inches vs. 117.5 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Wagoneer L is 2.9 inches wider in the front and 2.7 inches wider in the rear than on the XC90.

For greater off-road capability the Grand Wagoneer L Air Suspension has a greater minimum ground clearance than the XC90 w/Air Suspension (10 vs. 9.9 inches), allowing the Grand Wagoneer L to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The front grille of the Grand Wagoneer L uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The XC90 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Grand Wagoneer L uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The XC90 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Grand Wagoneer L offers optional seating for 8 passengers; the XC90 can only carry 7.

The Grand Wagoneer L has 75.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC90 (179.3 vs. 103.8).

The Grand Wagoneer L has 2.4 inches more front headroom, 7.4 inches more front hip room, 8.4 inches more front shoulder room, 1.5 inches more rear headroom, 5.7 inches more rear legroom, 6.5 inches more rear hip room, 8.7 inches more rear shoulder room, 2.8 inches more third row headroom, 4.7 inches more third row legroom, 6.7 inches more third row hip room and 17.5 inches more third row shoulder room than the XC90.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Wagoneer L’s middle and third row seats recline. The XC90’s third row seats don’t recline.

Pressing a button automatically lowers the Grand Wagoneer L’s optional second and third row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The XC90 doesn’t offer automatic folding second row seats.

Payload and Towing

The Grand Wagoneer L’s minimum standard towing capacity is much higher than the XC90’s (5770 vs. 5000 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Volvo XC90 is only 5000 pounds. The Grand Wagoneer L 4x4 offers up to a 9860 lbs. towing capacity.

The Grand Wagoneer L has a higher standard payload capacity than the XC90 (1410 vs. 1210 lbs.).

The Grand Wagoneer L has a much higher maximum payload capacity than the XC90 (1550 vs. 1210 lbs.).

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Grand Wagoneer L is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XC90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The Grand Wagoneer L’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The XC90 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

The Grand Wagoneer L’s standard front and rear power windows all open with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The XC90’s rear windows don’t open automatically. The Grand Wagoneer L Summit’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Grand Wagoneer L’s headlights were rated “Good” to “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the XC90’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Grand Wagoneer L has standard extendable sun visors. The XC90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Grand Wagoneer L has standard front air conditioned seats and the Grand Wagoneer L Summit offers them optionally in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The XC90 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Grand Wagoneer L has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the XC90.

The Grand Wagoneer L is equipped with both FM and AM stereo radios, offering access to more content and better coverage than the XC90, which solely provides FM radio. With AM radio, you can enjoy a wider variety of stations featuring news, talk shows, sports commentary, native language programing, automated traffic guidance, and emergency broadcasts. AM waves travel further and penetrate buildings and obstacles more effectively than FM signals, especially at night. Having both FM and AM stereo radios the Grand Wagoneer L offers a more comprehensive listening experience compared to only FM in the XC90.

HD Radio boasts several benefits over conventional radio: superior sound quality with clearer and consistent FM broadcasts, CD-quality audio, and Multicast Channels offering up to four streams from a single station, adding programming choices. Cars like the Grand Wagoneer L equipped with HD Radio provide an improved in-car entertainment experience. The XC90, devoid of this technology, foregoes these benefits. Selecting the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L empowers drivers to enjoy a more immersive and enjoyable listening experience while on the go.

The Grand Wagoneer L’s optional ParkSense Automated Parking can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The XC90 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Model Availability

The Grand Wagoneer L is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The XC90 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
